Somebody Up There Likes Me

The Bob Byington (Harmony and Me) movie, Somebody Up There Likes Me, premiered at the 2012 SXSW (South By Southwest) Film Festival. I had the pleasure of being the Key Makeup Artist and Hair Department Head. The HD movie screened for filmmakers, distributors and others at the festival in Austin at a time when people began clamoring for stories that are told using nontraditional approaches. Bob Byingtom did not disappoint.  Look for it on Netflix.

Bob Byington is an award-winning independent American film director, screenwriter, and actor living in Austin, Texas. He is most noted for his films RSO (Registered Sex Offender) (2008) and Harmony and Me (2009) which the LA Times describes as a “collision of joyous whimsy and bittersweet melancholy.”  Special Effects Makeup Supervisor was Alexei O’Brien (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and yours truly, Abiiba Howell, was the Key Makeup/Hair Dept. Head. This was a very different makeup experience because Bob (the Director) had never used makeup on his prior movies and the requirements were very character  (effects) driven. The makeup was deliberately nontraditional and minimalistic, while using techniques that increased the quirkiness of some of the actors.
